Worcs challenge fires Richardson

Richardson delighted to make Worcs start

Paceman Alan Richardson says he is excited by the challenge of rebuilding relegated Worcestershire.

The 34-year-old moved from Middlesex in September to join a side that has seen Gareth Batty, Steven Davies and Stephen Moore leave New Road.

"It looks like it's one of those cycles where the club is starting again," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"It would be nice if myself, Vikram Solanki, Ben Smith and Matt Mason can start a new cycle."

Richardson trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Monday as Worcestershire began their preparations for the 2010 season with a fitness test watched by new strength and conditioning coach Ross Dewar.

"We've had a bit of a bonding session and I've got to know the lads a bit better," added Richardson.

"I played against Vik [Solanki] when we were 13 or 14 in Staffordshire and have played against Daryll Mitchell a lot of times."

The former Warwickshire man, who still has a home in Sutton Coldfield, added that the move back to the Midlands was ideal for him after a frustrating final season at Lord's.

"They were light on the bowling side [at Middlesex] and I was rushed back from injuries all the time, so it's nice to have fresh start," he said.

"Steve Rhodes [coach] and Vic [Solanki, captain] were so enthusiastic that when the opportunity came about it was a no-brainer."
