Hampshire have signed Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi for next summer's Twenty20.

The 29-year-old was player of the tournament in the Twenty20 World Cup in 2007 and helped Pakistan win the tournament in 2009 with a half century.

"He's done it before in World Cups and he's doing it right now for South Australia," Hampshire cricket manager Giles White told BBC Radio Solent.

"We're hopeful he'll perform well and he'll turn out to be a good signing."

Since making his debut in Twenty20 cricket for Kent in 2004, Afridi has made 55 appearances in the format, scoring 834 runs and taking 70 wickets.

White believes that the all-rounder will be a valuable addition to the Hampshire side.

"He's a good fielder, as well as giving us a bit of firepower with the bat," said White.

"With the ball he's got a good strike rate. He doesn't go for too many either. His economy is good.

"Hopefully he'll form a good partnership with Ajantha Mendis and it will help us perform well in the competition."

Afridi has also played on the English domestic circuit with Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Ireland.
