Ashes tickets snapped up in hours

Diggers work on the Swalec Stadium outfield in Cardiff, ahead of the Ashes test

The first 6,000 tickets put on public sale by Glamorgan for England's first Ashes Test at the Swalec Stadium next July were sold in a matter of hours.

The county's phone lines and website were inundated with applicants from all over the world.

"We put 6,000 tickets on sale of which half went in the first hour," said Glamorgan finance and commercial director Alan Hamer.

"We have had calls for months, not just from the UK but Australia as well."

He added: "The first Ashes Test is the biggest cricket match in the world. It's great it's being played in Cardiff and hopefully it will create a legacy for Welsh cricket.

"We are keen to ensure as many people as possible come to see the game, so we limited how many tickets our members had to two each."

The county are due to put another 6,000 tickets up for sale to the public in January for the England-Australia clash being played between 8-12 July.

Meanwhile, the Swalec Stadium outfield is in the process of having a new 600,000 drainage system installed which is due to be completed in January.

The work is being done because of problems with the drainage of the outfield, which came to a head when the England v South Africa one-day international was abandoned.
