Run drought cost Durham in Twenty20 - Albie Morkel

Durham all-rounder Albie Morkel believes lack of runs cost the county the chance to progress in the Twenty20 competition this season.

Despite paying big money to attract stars such as Kiwi big-hitter Ross Taylor and Morkel, Durham finished second bottom of the North Group.

"From a personal point of view I didn't hit the ball as cleanly as I'd have liked," Morkel told BBC Newcastle.

"Twenty20 cricket is runs on the board and we never got going with the bat."

Despite the lack of success, Morkel maintains he enjoyed his return to the north east and the English county game.

"I really enjoyed my time here," the Proteas big-hitter said.

"It's a lovely set-up, the facilities are great and everyone in the team tries to contribute to the team which makes it a nice family environment.

"I've definitely enjoyed it from a playing point of view but I was disappointed we couldn't go further in the tournament. The guys are all disappointed, so I don't know whether I'll be part of it next year.

"But I hope the guys learn from this experience and bounce back next year."
