Yorkshire wrapped up a four-wicket win over Durham at Chester-le-Street to keep up the pressure on County Championship leaders Nottinghamshire.

Resuming on 245-4 in pursuit of 299 for victory, the Tykes lost nightwatchman Steve Patterson and Gerard Brophy, both to Steve Harmison.

But captain Andrew Gale (70 not out) saw the visitors to victory.

Yorkshire temporarily replace second-placed Somerset, six points behind Notts, who have a game in hand.

Yorkshire meet Notts at Trent Bridge in a game commencing on Tuesday, 7 September, but in addition to this, the Tykes may need a helping hand from their old rivals Lancashire, who still have to play the leaders twice.

The defeat ends Durham's slim hopes of a third successive title and leaves them with work to do to avoid relegation.

Although they lie fourth in the Division One table, they are just 17 points ahead of eighth-placed Essex, who have played a game more.

However, they may have a say in who succeeds them as County Champions, as they are still to entertain Notts and have to play Somerset home and away.
