Chris Schofield hit an unbeaten 87 to help Surrey fight back against Essex on day one at Colchester.

After the visitors won the toss, Chris Wright and Danish Kaneria each took two wickets to help reduce Surrey to 136-5.

But Schofield then combined with Matt Spriegel (61) for a sixth-wicket partnership of 127.

Spriegel was caught by Tom Westley off the bowling of Tim Philips, but Schofield remained defiant, seeing Surrey to 304-6 at the close.

After the visitors had elected to bat, Michael Brown fell to the ninth ball of the day, caught behind by James Foster off the bowling of Wright.

Jon Batty and Mark Ramprakash took the score to 39, before Batty was caught at slip by Mark Pettini to give leg-spinner Kaneria his first wicket of the day.

Ramprakash, watched by national selector Geoff Miller, struck five fours and a six in his 33, but when he was caught behind off David Masters, it sparked a slump which saw Surrey lose three wickets for 36 runs.

Spriegel and Schofield repaired the damage with their 36-over stand, in which Spriegel recorded his highest ever first-class score.

His 138-ball innings came to an end when he was caught at mid-off, leaving Stuart Meaker (22 not out) to accompany Schofield to the close.
