Jacques Rudolph's 191 was his second highest score in Yorkshire colours

Jacques Rudolph's superb 191 on the opening day at Taunton put winless Yorkshire in control of their County Championship clash with Somerset.

Yorkshire are bidding to avoid a record 18 first-class games without a win - a run that dates back to the corresponding fixture last June.

But in their first game since the retirement of Michael Vaughan, the Tykes finally showed their spirit.

Skipper Anthony McGrath made 40 as his side ended the day on 375-7.

Jonathan Bairstow, still standing in behind the stumps for Gerard Brophy, weighed in with 39 and Adam Lyth 36.

But it proved a tough day in humid conditions for one of Vaughan's old England team-mates, 40-year-old Andy Caddick, who finished with 0-77 from 16 overs on his return from injury.

Instead, it was opener Rudolph who dominated almost from the start.

In what could be a good omen for Yorkshire, Rudolph scored a century in that win over Somerset last season.

And, after enjoying one moment of fortune when he was bowled by a Caddick yorker on 32 only to see umpire Trevor Jesty signalling a no-ball, he struck 29 boundaries in a 291-ball stay.

Rudolph was eventually fifth man out just nine short of a deserved double century and within reach of his county best 220 against Warwickshire at Scarborough in August 2007.

He was bowled by a full-length ball from David Stiff, who tightened his line having switched ends.
