CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Sussex 78-3, Yorkshire 225 (Sussex 3pts, Yorks 2pts)

Gerard Brophy's 75 not out rescued Yorkshire from 100-7 and gave them the upper hand on day two against Sussex.

Resuming on 58-2, the hosts were pegged back by Corey Collymore (4-68) and Robin Martin-Jenkins (3-38).

But Brophy shared 96 for the eighth wicket with David Wainwright (36) as Yorkshire recovered to 225 all out.

Sussex then lost Michael Yardy, Michael Thornley and Murray Goodwin to single-figure scores before 38 not out from Ed Joyce led them to 78-3 at the close.

After a rain-hit first day, Yorkshire lost captain Anthony McGrath before a run had been scored on day two at Headingley.

He was caught at slip by Ollie Rayner off the bowling of Collymore before Andrew Gale holed out to mid-on off the bowling of Jason Lewry.

Joe Sayers, Tim Bresnan and Rana Naved ul-Hasan then all fell to Martin-Jenkins to bring Wainwright to the crease for his first Championship innings since his hundred in the final game of last season.

His 96-run stand with Brophy came in 26 overs, but when he was caught by Martin-Jenkins off the bowling of Collymore, Dwayne Smith was summoned to take the final two wickets and wrap up the Yorkshire innings.

Yardy and Thornley both fell lbw for eight to Deon Kruis and Naved respectively and when Goodwin was caught by Sayers off the medium pace of McGrath, the visitors were struggling on 78-3.

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior (18 not out) then joined Joyce to see Sussex through to stumps.
