Tredwell spins Kent to Trophy win

Kent 137-4 beat Middlesex 133 by six wickets

James Tredwell was the Kent matchwinner as Middlesex slumped to a six-wicket FP Trophy home defeat at Southgate.

Off spinner Tredwell took 6-27, his one-day best, as Middlesex were bowled out on a troublesome track for 133.

Kent then had few worries reaching their target, getting home on 137-4 with more than 12 overs to spare.

Darren Stevens saw his side to a comfortable victory with an unbeaten 37 to leave both sides having now won one of their two games in Group B.

After suffering a 110-run drubbing against Somerset in their opening Group B game at Taunton last week, Kent this time proved the dominant force.

And it was all inspired by a spell-binding stint of four wickets for just two runs in 12 balls by Tredwell that started with the prized scalp of Australian Test opener Phillip Hughes.

Averaging 161 in the championship and yet to be dismissed for less than 50, 20-year-old Hughes had already been dropped on two by Denly at point.

But the Aussie left-hander tried to bully Tredwell's first ball through the covers, skying, again to point, where Denly this time took the catch.

And, in his next over, Tredwell enjoyed a treble-wicket maiden, accounting for Dawid Malan (2), Eoin Morgan (13) and Gareth Berg (0).

Kent made a circumspect start in reply, losing skipper Rob Key for 17 after they had cut the deficit to double figures when he edged to the keeper trying to run one down to third man.

But, despite the departure of Denly and Martin van Jaarsveld, who drove to mid-off the next ball after clearing the ropes at long-off, Stevens then built the highest stand of the match, 46 with James Hockley. And Geraint Jones helped to steer Kent across the line.
