Marcus Trescothick became the first batsman to score 1,000 runs in Division One this season as Somerset made a fine start against Surrey at Taunton.

The former England opener passed the milestone with an unbeaten 46 to see the home side to 110-0 at stumps on a rain-shortened day one of four.

Opening partner Justin Langer ended the day on 55 not out, racing to his half-century off just 57 balls.

Rain interruptions ensured only 21.3 overs were bowled in the day.

Surrey captain Mark Ramprakash won the toss and elected to bowl first and take advantage of a pitch which looked to offer the bowlers assistance.

But his seamers failed to extract any notable movement as Langer and Trescothick tore into the bowling, smashing 36 after just 3.5 overs.

But a heavy downpour prevented any further play until the late afternoon and 57 overs were lost as a result.

Trescothick's 65-ball innings contained 10 fours, with more than half coming with drives through the covers.

Former West Indian bowler Pedro Collins suffered most of the Surrey bowlers, his six overs with the new ball costing 43 runs.
