Adams asks to end Sussex contract
Chris Adams lifts the County Championship trophy
Adams has turned Sussex into a force in county cricket
Sussex have revealed that captain Chris Adams has asked to be released from his contract, with Yorkshire keen to sign the veteran batsman.

Adams is thought to have been offered a long-term deal at Headingley combining captaincy and managerial duties.

And a Sussex statement read: "With great regret we confirm that Chris has asked to be released from his contract.

"We will consider granting his wish as we recognise the wonderful opportunity he has of going into management."

Adams joined Sussex in 1998 from Derbyshire, where he played for 10 years, and also appeared in five Tests and five one-day internationals for England from 1998-2000.

He led the Hove-based club to a second title in four seasons and a C&G Trophy triumph last term.

We've expressed a desire to bring him to Headingley

Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan on Adams

Nicknamed "Grizzly", Adams has made no secret of his desire to move into a management role and was recently overlooked for the position of chief executive by Sussex.

And on Thursday, Tykes chief executive Stewart Regan told BBC Sport: "The ball is in his court. We've expressed a desire to bring him to Headingley.

"We have been in discussions with Chris about how he can develop as an individual.

"He's 36 and is looking at where he goes after his playing career finishes."

Following news of Yorkshire's interest, county champions Sussex responded by offering the 36-year-old more money and a year's extension to his deal.

But it appears to have held little sway after Adams' request to leave the club.

He could now be set to take over as Tykes skipper next season following Craig White's decision to quit at the end of last season.
