Knight ton leads Bears past Kent
C&G Trophy quarter-final, Edgbaston: Warwickshire 261-5 (46.1 overs) beat Kent 259-6 (50 overs) by five wickets

Captain Nick Knight hit an unbeaten 112 to help Warwickshire cruise past Kent with five wickets in hand in the C&G Trophy quarter-final at Edgbaston.

Trevor Penney joined him in an unbroken stand of 82, making an unbeaten 50, to clinch victory with four overs left.

On a slow pitch, Kent's total of 259-6 had looked below par, despite strong showings from from Andrew Hall (62), Rob Key 53 and Matthew Walker (51).

Spinners Alex Loudon - once of Kent - and Ashley Giles each took two wickets.

It's given me a real lift for sure but I still don't feel in particularly good nick
Nick Knight

The match continued form as this was Warwickshire's eighth win in nine Trophy meetings with Kent since 1989 and Knight hit 122 not out in a Totesport League victory on 1 May.

The left hander hit 12 fours in reaching his 27th limited overs hundred from 116 deliveries

In 10 innings in the knock-out competition since retiring from intyernational cricket in 2003, he has scored 560 runs.

Justin Kemp had given Kent some hope with figures of 3-43, including a smartly-taken return catch from Ian Bell.

But Penney took the heat out of the closing phase with a hard-hitting 40-ball knock.

And Knight was eager to deflect praise to the Zimbabwean veteran.

"It's given me a real lift for sure but I still don't feel in particularly good nick," said Knight.

"Trevor has played extremely well in one-day cricket this season.

"With Trevor in the sort of form he is in at the moment I knew that all the responsibility of securing victory would not be on me."
