The dream team: England's century makers Trott, Cook and Strauss

Test cricket is played over five days and despite England's dire second-innings scoreboard - from Australia's point of view - it would be fair to say that, overall, the first Ashes Test match was a very even contest.

Some may disagree with that assessment but the statistics tell an interesting tale.

Overall, both teams only lost 11 wickets in the match, they each had one stand-out bowler with a six-wicket haul and they both had centurions, albeit England with three and Australia with two.

In the outcome of this game lies the fascination of Test match cricket for me. After five hard-fought days of back-breaking cricket, neither team has really drawn first blood.

While both teams will claim some positives from the game, they will also have a few mental and physical scars which will need to be mended before the start of play in Adelaide on Friday.

With such a quick turnaround, the strategies for game two will be intriguing to watch.

On day five in Brisbane, Alastair Cook was supreme. The England opener is an extremely talented player who, from all accounts, deserves every success because of his work ethic and character.

His partner, Jonathan Trott, continued his excellent form against this Australian bowling attack and looked very confident from ball one.

Andrew Strauss's declaration, however, could work in Australia's favour, in that Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson were able to spend invaluable time at the crease.

Having said that, England's intent is different than we have seen from them in the past and Australia will have to be at their best for long periods of time to wrestle back that little urn.
