England excuses must stop - Warne
Shane Warne
Warne has been linked with a coaching role in English cricket
Australia leg-spin legend Shane Warne thinks England focus too hard on the Ashes and must stop making "excuses" if they are to start winning.

"At the moment they're a long way behind (Australia). All I can hear is excuses - 'we haven't got this or that player'," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"They need to just get on with it and start playing good cricket.

"I think they get too wrapped up in the Ashes. They've got to start winning things. But the players are there."

England were heavily criticised for poor performances in the first two one-day internationals against New Zealand and Warne, who retired from international cricket in January 2007, says the players have let their standards slip.

"I think they're now seventh in the one-day rankings, down there with Bangladesh and everybody else," he said at the Laureus World Sports Awards in St Petersburg.

"They need to just stop the chatting, stop the excuses, and get on and start playing some good cricket."

England did produce a better performance to claim victory in the third one-day international to keep the five-game New Zealand series alive.

Warne has on occasions been linked with a spin bowling coaching role with England, but it was announced in December that he would be taking up a development role with Australia's young spinners.

He will captain his county side Hampshire for only the final two months of the upcoming English domestic season because of poker and Indian Premier League commitments.

"I'll be coming back after the Twenty20 Cup," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"We're looking at three overseas players to cover an eight-week period each during the season."

Hampshire hope to make an announcement before the end of February on Warne's replacements.
