Irish skipper relishes shock win

Ireland captain Trent Johnston said his players had "come of age" by beating Pakistan in the World Cup in one of the biggest shocks in cricketing history.

Ireland, playing in their first World Cup, defeated Pakistan by three wickets at Sabina Park in one of the greatest sensations in the sport's history.

Johnston said: "We were outstanding in the field today and the way we batted to chase down the runs was fantastic.

"It was really tense at the end, but all the boys came of age today."

Johnston took the prized wicket of Mohammad Yousuf and hit the winning runs with a huge six over long-on.

If West Indies beat Zimbabwe, his team are assured a place in the Super Eights, whatever happens in Ireland's final group game against the tournament hosts.

Johnston said: "We were lucky to win the toss but we bowled well and put the ball in all the right areas.

"We were always asking questions of Pakistan. To beat a team like them is just amazing."

Niall O'Brien was man of the match for his 72.

His brother Kevin, who took a wicket and made a vital 16 not out with Johnston at the end, said: "Niall batted brilliantly and held the middle order together. He won the game for us.

"We knew Pakistan were short of confidence in their top order and we knew if we won the toss we would have a bowl and hopefully nick a few of them out early.

"We're over the moon, with it being St Patrick's Day as well, and we'll have a few social beers to celebrate.

"Just like last time the crowd were brilliant - they never give up."
