Book on D'Oliveira wins award
Basil D'Oliveira
D'Oliveira was forced to move to England to play Test cricket

A biography of former England player Basil D'Oliveira has been named 2004 William Hill Sports Book of the Year.

Peter Oborne, political editor of The Spectator, focuses on D'Oliveira's role in the apartheid controversy which led to South Africa's sporting exile.

"Oborne's winner is a timeless tale of how racism blighted a sport," Hills spokesman Graham Sharpe commented.

Former England batsman Ed Smith's "On And Off The Field" was among the other five books shortlisted.
