Former England fast bowler Devon Malcolm has announced his retirement from first-class cricket.

The 40-year-old has played only three Championship games for Leicestershire this summer because of injury.

"Instead of batsmen licking their lips and thinking 'Here comes the old man', I hope they will offer a sigh of relief that I'm stepping down," he said.

Malcolm took 1,054 wickets at an average of 30 during his career, including 128 in 40 Test appearances.

He spent the first 15 years with Derbyshire and also had a spell with Northamptonshire before joining Leicestershire for the 2001 season.

His Test debut came against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1989, a match in which he returned figures of 1-166 and England lost by an innings and 180 runs.

His finest hour in international cricket came at The Oval five years later when he took 9-57 as England beat South Africa by eight wickets.

Malcolm is bowing out after calling for the number of overseas players in county cricket to be reduced.

"All we are doing is feathering the nests of Australia and South Africa and others by acting as a finishing school for their Test candidates," he told the Daily Mirror.

"There is supposed to be a limit of two overseas players per county but every time one of them is called up for international duty, the counties just go out and sign another one on a short-term contract.

"So instead of giving our best prospects experience in the County Championship, we are preparing these guys to come back and one day bite the hand that once fed them."
