Commonwealth Games 2010: Tom Daley wins second gold

Perfect 10 Daley strikes gold

World champion Tom Daley won the Commonwealth 10m platform diving title with a narrow victory over Australian Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham.

The English 16-year-old overcame a triceps injury he sustained in August to win gold with 538.35 points, beating Mitcham by a margin of 29.20.

The win handed Daley his second gold medal of the 2010 Games, having won 10m synchro gold with Max Brick on Tuesday.

Malaysia's Bryan Nickson Lomas won bronze while Brick came eighth.

"I know Matt Mitcham has been on top form as he was the World Cup champion this year, so to come away with the gold and get ahead of him makes me so happy," Daley told BBC Sport.

"It gives me so much confidence going into the off-season, ready to prepare four new dives for next year.

"Today has been a complete whirlwind. Coming back from an injury with only three-to-four weeks of 10m training, and being on the top of my game is brilliant."

Whereas Daley's approach to the competition saw him execute his trickiest dives first, Mitcham, 22, reserved a difficult routine for his sixth and final dive but failed to hold his nerve.

Daley explains 'perfect' dive

The Devonian teenager was unable to defend his European title two months earlier, having injured his triceps muscle during the 10m synchro competition in Budapest.

But he recorded perfect 10s on his third dive in the Delhi individual final and led Mitcham from the fourth round onwards.

"Matthew Mitcham had it all to play for and he threw it away," said BBC commentator Leon Taylor, Olympic silver medallist in the synchro event at the Athens Games in 2004. "Daley was too strong."

Daley's father, Rob, did not travel to Delhi as he is undergoing chemotherapy, but watched on live BBC television as his son dedicated the victory to him.

"All I can say is that one is for you," said the junior Daley. "I knew you would be watching on TV and I had to do it for you."

Earlier on Wednesday, Australia's Sharleen Stratton scored 376 points on her way to gold in the women's 3m springboard final.

Stratton, who turned 23 last week, beat Canada's Jennifer Abel to the title, with fellow Australian Jaele Patrick taking bronze.

English duo Rebecca Gallantree (313.29) and 13-year-old Alicia Blagg (243.30) finished fifth and 10th respectively - Gallantree third top-six finish of the Games - while Scotland's Grace Reid scored 303.15 to place sixth.
