Krishna Poonia became the first Indian woman to win athletics gold at a Commonwealth Games as she led a home medals clean sweep in the discus.

She is only the second Indian to win a Games track and field title, after Milka Singh in the 1958 440-yard race.

"I dedicate this medal to all the Indians," said Poonia, 28, after winning with a best throw of 61,51m.

Compatriots Harwant Kaur threw 60.16 for silver while Seema Antil took the bronze in Delhi with 58.46.

Poonia said she hoped her triumph would counteract negative headlines surrounding the 2010 Games, which has been plagued by claims of poor organisation and construction problems.

"With this I think we wiped out everything bad that was happening before the games and came out united," she said.

"It's fantastic. What could be better than this?"

Raucous cheers greeted each of her throws at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"The crowd inspired me to the medal," said runner-up Kaur. "They supported me right from the beginning."

Poonia added: "I can't express my happiness to see all the support.

"I enjoyed it and I thank all the people who came to support me."

Singh, nicknamed the Flying Sikh, won his gold in the 1958 Games held in Wales.
