Aussie Dani Samuels pulls out of Commonwealth Games

World champion discus thrower Dani Samuels has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games because of concerns over her health and safety in Delhi.

She is the first Australian to pull out of the Games because of her worries.

Her decision follows Sunday's gun attack on a tourist bus in Delhi and an outbreak of dengue fever in the city.

Samuels' manager Hayden Knowles said: "The situation has been bothering her for some time and the events of the weekend made it real."

Knowles added that he hoped the 22-year-old's decision would not affect other Australian athletes preparing to compete in the Indian capital.

"I wouldn't think she's got that much influence and she certainly doesn't want that," he added.

"She found it hard to announce her decision because of how it might affect other athletes in the team.

"Many of them are really close friends and they don't know about this yet."

Samuels won the world discus title in Berlin last year and had been tipped to add the Commonwealth title to her collection after winning a three-woman event that featured America's Olympic champion Stephanie Brown-Trafton in Sydney last week.

Two Taiwanese men were wounded when attackers on a motorbike opened fire on a tourist bus outside the Jama Masjid mosque.

An outbreak of dengue fever in July has affected more than 1,500 people in Delhi.
