Florence qualified for his second semi-final in 12th position

David Florence moved closer to winning two European Championship events by qualifying for his second semi-final of the competition.

Having made it through to the canoe doubles with Richard Hounslow on Thursday, he qualified for the C1 singles along with Mark Proctor.

Meanwhile in the men's K1 event, Hounslow also made it through to his second semi-final of the meeting.

He is joined in the semis by fellow Brits Campbell Walsh and Huw Swetnam.

Hounslow impressed as he qualified in first place while defending champion Walsh was sixth and Swetnam 13th.

"I'm happy with the time and, most importantly, the performance. I dropped low on gate 12 but it was pretty perfect other than that," said Walsh.

"The hardest part is at the start," added Hounslow.

"You have to get the spacing right at the first upstream gate. If you're a bit too close, it can end before its started."

Also through is Germany's Olympic silver medallist, Fabian Lefevre in 11th, while Germany's Olympic gold medallist Alexander Grimm only just qualified, in 18th fopr the semi-finals, which will take place on Sunday.

In the C1 event Olympic Gold medallists Michal Martikan of Slovakia and Tony Estanguet of France qualified for Sunday's semi-finals in positions 16th and eighth respectively.

Florence, the Olympic silver medallist, qualified in 12th while Proctor was 18th.

"It was just a solid run, getting me through to the next stage," said Florence.

"It's good to be paddling well, it gives you confidence to see a good time."

The competition is the first major slalom event in the UK for 14 years and the first meeting of top European paddlers since the Beijing Olympics last August.
