Scott Lawton's professional career ended in defeat against Derry Mathews in Liverpool on Saturday night.

The Stoke-on-Trent fighter recovered from a knockdown in the sixth round to take the fight the full distance.

However, all three judges scored the bout in favour of Liverpool's Mathews, who claimed the vacant IBO international lightweight title.

Former English champion Lawton had stated previously that the bout would be his last contest as a professional.

He finishes with a career record of 27 wins, eight losses and one draw in 36 fights, six of them coming by knockout, including a sixth-round stoppage against Mathews the last time the pair met in November 2009.

The 34-year-old fought for the British title twice, losing to Jon Thaxton and John Murray, and also failed with a challenge for Amir Khan's Commonwealth lightweight title in October 2007.

The fight, at Liverpool's Olympia, was promoted by former Barrow, Widnes and Chester City chairman Stephen Vaughan.
