Jeff Evans loses to Paul David in Prizefighter semi

Pontypool rookie super-middleweight Jeff Evans has suffered his first professional defeat, falling to event runner-up Paul David in Prizefighter.

Evans, 27, opened with a fine split-decision win over Peter Fedorenko in the battle for the £32,000 prize in the three-round, three-fight event.

But Northampton's David, 25, had too much in the semi-final, winning 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 on the judges' cards.

Evans' record now goes to four wins, all on points, against the one defeat.

The Welshman, a welder and fabricator by day, is one of boxing's late starters, having started fighting aged 21, and was the most inexperienced man on the bill at the York Hall.

The former Welsh amateur finalist had just 20 amateur bouts and previously only three fights in his year-long professional career under former world middleweight challenger Gary Lockett.

He had been sparring with European light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion Bradley Pryce in the build-up to Prizefighter, though, and impressed against Fedorenko, 32.

The Sheffield man looked to take the lively opening round with the superior quality and power of his punches.

But Evans started boxing from range and took control with classier work.

The Welshman seemed to take the second and third rounds, but the judges' decisions were split, one giving it to Federenko 28-27, the other two to Evans by 29-28.

Pre-tournament favourite David had produced a stunning uppercut for a brutal third-round knock-out of Carl Drake in his quarter-final.

Against expectations in the semi-final, Evans seemed to win the cagey opening round.

But David, who admitted that the Welshman gave him a tougher fight than he had anticipated, upped the pace for the final two stanzas.

Evans coped well, but twice in the final round showed the effects after heavy exchanges, David emerging a deserved winner.

The Northampton man lost a unanimous points decision in the final to Maidenhead's Patrick Mendy.

Mendy, at 19 the youngest man ever to take part in Prizefighter, had previously stopped Sam Horton in the first round of their quarter-final and claimed a hard-fought points win over Daniel Cadman in a superb semi-final.
