Mathews calls time on his career

Liverpool super-featherweight Derry Mathews says it is the right time for him to retire at the age of 26.

The former WBU featherweight champion was defeated for the fourth time in five outings against Scott Lawton in his final bout on Friday.

"I just feel it's time," Mathews told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I've put everything I can into boxing and I've been doing it for 17 years. I'm healthy, I've got my family to look after and now's the time to go out."

He added: "I'm not going out on a high, I'm going out on a low. But I'm happy that I am going out and I'm in one piece."

Mathews fought 25 times in his professional career, with 21 wins and four losses.

The first of his defeats came against Choi Tseveenpurev in Bolton in April 2008.

That fight marked the beginning of a downturn in his fortunes.

"A lot of people have asked 'Why did you ever fight Choi?' In this game, to be the best you've got to beat the best," he said.

"It was offered to me on a plate and I wanted to take the fight. George [Vaughan] believed that I could beat the fighter."

In the 18 months after his defeat by Choi, Mathews tried to revive his career, changing promoters twice and moving up in weight from featherweight to super-featherweight.

"I was beaten by a better man, there is no doubt about it. No one in the country or the world wanted to fight Choi and he's only boxed once since," he said.

"He's had to retire as no one will fight him. So I'll hold my hands up and say I've boxed the best and I have always boxed the best.

"It was a hard fight and maybe that might have been the difference."

You can hear more from Mathews during On the Ropes with Craig Lowe on BBC Radio Merseyside on Wednesday, 18 November - 95.8 FM, 1485 MW and DAB from 2030 GMT.
