Warren predicts Calzaghe comeback

Frank Warren believes recently retired two-weight world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe would make a comeback if the money is right.

Calzaghe's former promoter hailed the unbeaten Welshman as the greatest British fighter of his generation.

"If the right fight comes up, if there is somebody there who he feels would be a challenge and if the terms are right, I'm sure he would consider it.

"And knowing Joe, he may even take it," Warren told the BBC's Sportsweek.

Calzaghe, 36, called time on his unblemished 46-fight, 15-year career last Thursday and said he had "achieved everything he wanted to achieve" and had "no other goals to go for."

The longest-reigning world title-holder in boxing history, Calzaghe ruled the super-middleweight division for two weeks short of 11 years after defeating Chris Eubank on points for the vacant WBO title in 1997.

He destroyed Jeff Lacy in a career-defining unification showdown in 2006, which he followed with a superb victory over Mikkel Kessler.

He then travelled to the United States to outpoint American greats Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr at light-heavyweight.

"He is the best, without a doubt," Warren told Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek show.

"He is undefeated and held his title for 11 years and beat every decent fighter of his generation. But whether his retirement is permanent or not is another thing.

"In six months time he may be sitting at home and there may be a challenge that may come up for him, there may be somebody might want to tempt him back into the sport, but I hope he doesn't do that.

"A lot of people say it's not for money - but at the end of the day it is.

"It is professional boxing and that is what boxers box for, if it wasn't for the money so many big matches would be easily made."

American Chad Dawson, the 26-year-old IBO and IBF and light-heavyweight champion, is the young pretender to Calzaghe's 175lb throne.

And Warren added: "There are not many American boxers could challenge Joe Calzaghe, there's probably only one in the light-heavyweight division and that's Chad Dawson - or maybe a return with Bernard Hopkins."
