Magee eyes European title fight

Brian Magee is hoping to land a European title fight in 2009 after claiming the British super-middleweight belt in Brentwood on Saturday.

Magee stopped Scottish fighter Stevie McGuire in eight rounds to win the British title and he says the victory has got his career back on track.

"This is a great platform. That's me putting my name in for all kinds of title opportunities," said Magee.

"Maybe a European title fight might be next out there."

The 33-year-old acknowledges that he felt his career has been "in limbo" over the last couple of years since he lost a tremendous contest against new WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch in May 2006.

He attempted a move up to light-heavyweight last year but was held to a controversial draw in a British title challenge against Tony Oakey.

Since then, he has been back to the porridge of a series of low-key contests and Magee admits that there were times when he struggled for motivation.

"When you are fighting four-rounders and six and eight-rounders, the fights can be just as hard as title bouts but there's no belt or titles at stake and the purse is not there either."

Defeat against McGuire would probably have ended Magee's days as a title contender but, instead, he is now convincing himself that his best could yet be to come.

"I felt I was in the best shape of my life on Saturday. Despite the damage that he did to me with his head, I didn't take any real punishment at all and I'm now convinced that I've another few years left in me."
