Jones Jr can imitate Ali - Haye

Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr
Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr battle in New York on Saturday

Heavyweight David Haye has compared Joe Calzaghe's fight with Roy Jones Jr to that of the 1974 showdown between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

Wales' Calzaghe, 36, fights Jones for the undisputed world light-heavyweight crown in New York on Saturday.

Haye told BBC London 94.9: "Obviously Roy is in the twilight of his career.

"Everyone thought Ali was over the hill when he fought Foreman and he had one last performance to shock the critics. Roy wants to do a similar thing."

He added: "He's fighting someone who he's been written off against. He's fighting someone with 45 fights and 45 wins, Joe can't spell 'lose', he's a natural born winner.

"That's what makes this fight so intriguing, Roy has been at the top of his game for years but he's coming to the end of it and can Joe go out on the biggest high possible in boxing?

"It's a really intriguing fight, he's fighting an all time great, he's a hall of famer. What Jones did in his peak was special, it was on the level of Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali.

"I will be watching it, I think this will be one of the most important fights in years and I can't wait for it."

Haye, meanwhile, is preparing for his own non-title heavyweight bout against Monte Barrett in London on 15 November.

It is the 27-year-old Londoner's first fight at that level and he has admitted he may quit if he loses to the 37-year-old from New York.

But former undisputed cruiserweight champion Haye, who has one defeat from 22 fights, is confident he can make the step up.

"He [Barrett] said he was going to spank me. He really fancies the job, he has been in there with the best fighters in the world, always giving a good account of himself," said Haye.

"He thinks I've made a mistake by picking him as my first opponent, but I've chosen someone who comes to fight and win.

"But I'm a born fighter and this is what I do and I can't wait to get out there and show everyone what I've been grafting for over the last four months.

"I need the support as well, it's going to be a real tear up, if there's people out there who haven't been to a boxing match then come down - you'll see the future of the heavyweight division."
