Calzaghe eyes final Garden test

Joe Calzaghe hopes for a grand career finale in Madison Square Garden as he suggested that his 8 November fight with Roy Jones Jr will be his last.

"Headlining the Millennium Stadium and Las Vegas were great, the Garden is the last thing left," he told BBC Sport.

"Roy is one of the best in history and the Garden is boxing's greatest venue - if you can't get excited by that, you're in the wrong sport."

The rescheduled New York bout will be contested at light-heavyweight.

The undefeated Welshman pulled out of their planned 20 September show at the Garden after injuring his right hand in training.

"The doctors have given my wrist the all clear, I've been well rested and have 12 weeks to go - that's perfect," said Calzaghe, who has won all 45 of his fights, 32 by knock-out.

"I'll never forgive myself if I lose my last fight having been undefeated for the last 17 years."

Calzaghe, 36, has ruled the super-middleweight division for almost 11 years and is the longest reigning current champion in boxing.

Although continuing to hint at retirement after the Jones fight, he still left the door ajar for a future bout when questioned about middleweight king Kelly Pavlik.

"Show me the money is all I have to say, we'll have to wait and see," said the Newbridge man, before adding:

"I've achieved everything, it's dangerous to fight on if your heart's not in it.

"I'll stay around the gym when I retire, maybe concentrate on promoting, we'll see how it goes - it's not like I have to rush into a day job.

"But for now I know that I'm still a fighter and that I've got to go into the ring on 8 November ready to kick arse."

Jones, 39, is an eight-times world champion in four weight classes, holding a record of 52 wins (38 by knock-out) and four defeats.

He won a unanimous decision over Felix Trinidad in his last bout in January, also at Madison Square Garden.
