Brook secures welterweight title

Kell Brook extended his perfect record to 17 victories by stopping Barrie Jones in the seventh round to land the vacant British welterweight title.

The Sheffield boxer dominated the fight before the referee stepped in.

Brook, 22, was due to meet Scotland's Kevin McIntyre, but the former champion was stripped of his belt after twice withdrawing injured.

"I've had so many opponents pull out in the past, but hopefully now I've got this title that won't happen," he said.

"I'll defend it against anybody, whether it's McIntyre, [Tony] Doherty, whoever they want me to."

Going into the fight, Brook had never gone beyond six rounds, yet he proved too strong for Jones in the latter stages, who slipped to a second successive defeat.

However, after the bout at London's York Hall, Brook praised Jones for taking the fight at short notice.

"He's such a nice guy," Brook said. "Usually when you fight someone there's a bit of needle there, but it was difficult to have that with Barrie."
