Haye promises 'massacre in ring'

Enzo Maccarinelli v David Haye, Radio 5 Live and BBC Sport website, Sunday 9 March, approx 0130 GMT

David Haye expects to "massacre" Enzo Maccarinelli in Sunday's eagerly awaited world title showdown.

Haye labelled Maccarinelli as "mentally weak" ahead of their cruiserweight unification clash at The O2 Arena.

"Enzo has bitten off more than he can chew and he's going to get smashed up, there will be a massacre in the ring," said Haye.

"I've got the Ring Magazine belt, I'm the world number one, I'm the linear champ and I'm going to do some damage."

Haye added: "They can put him first on the poster and say he's the man but I'm the world champion - he's the challenger. "

Haye was crowned WBC and WBA cruiserweight champion when he dethroned Jean-Marc Mormeck in November as he climbed off the canvas to floor the Frenchman in the seventh round.

Maccarinelli claimed the WBO belt relinquished by Johnny Nelson when the Welshman became the first fighter to knock out Argentine Marcelo Fabian Dominguez in a title eliminator.

"I've got the WBC belt, the same belt as Muhammad Ali, and the WBA title, which Larry Holmes once held," said the 27-year-old Haye.

"I beat the man that beat the man, O'Neil Bell.

"Enzo won a vacant title after beating some chump when Johnny Nelson retired and gave up his belt.

"Then he claims he's the number one, well I'm sorry but boxing doesn't work like that."

Maccarinelli had previously claimed Haye had refused the showdown 12 months ago.

But Londoner Haye insisted: "I'm positive they took the fight because I said after beating Mormeck that it killed me to make the cruiserweight limit.

"It's mysterious that as soon as I say I'll never fight at cruiserweight again, all of a sudden they want to take the fight.

"I'm a more natural heavyweight but when I say I'm only fighting at 70% of my potential that's when these guys get brave.

"They've gambled wrong and as I've been training ever since I beat Mormeck, I feel even better than I did then. I'm 100%."

Haye dismissed fears of his ability to hit the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit when he had two pounds to spare as he tipped the scales at Friday's weigh-in.

Swansea showman Maccarinelli weighed one pound lighter at 14st 1lb before the obligatory nose-to-nose stare-out, which passed without incident.

"I had been nice in the build-up because I didn't want Enzo getting scared and pulling out," said Haye.

"I don't think he's mentally strong, I wanted him to train with his friends while I've been grafting in the heat of Miami.

"And as soon as I start landing my bombs, Enzo is going down.

"Maybe he can hold on for a few rounds if he is lucky but as soon as the Hayemaker lands then he is hitting the floor.

"I won't be happy to win on points, I want to completely dominate him in every single department, be clean and clinical but win pretty."
