Skelton world title hope in ruins

Frank Warren says his hope of delivering a world title shot to Matt Skelton or Michael Sprott is in ruins after their dismal bout on Saturday.

Warren had promised the winner of the Commonwealth heavyweight title clash a tilt by the end of the year.

But while Skelton won a majority decision, 12 rounds of grappling have made both men very difficult to sell.

"After what happened last night I'm going to have a job getting either of those guys a chance," said Warren.

"It wasn't a very convincing performance from either of them. The press weren't very happy and nor were the punters - and they're the ones who buy the tickets.

"I'll have a chat with them to see where we go from here. It certainly wasn't a pretty fight to watch. People buy tickets to be entertained, not to watch that.

"There's no consistency in the British heavyweight division and that makes it difficult to get people interested in them.

"One minute they're in a good fight and the next they're in a terrible one. They're difficult to sell."

Slow handclaps, booing, chants of 'Bruno' - the former British favourite was commentating at ringside - and repeated reminders from the referee of their duty to entertain stained the contest.

One judge scored the fight a draw (114-114) and the remaining two (117-113 and 115-114) called it in Skelton's favour, but by that stage few were still watching.
