Barnes stops Hare to keep title
David Barnes defended his British welterweight title with a sixth-round stoppage of James Hare in Halifax to claim a Lonsdale belt outright.

Hare started brightly and edged the opening two rounds but was cut badly in the third as Barnes turned the tide.

Barnes floored the home-town fighter in the fourth round and a big left hand sent Hare to the canvas in the sixth.

"There are still things I can work on but the world is my oyster now," said the 23-year-old Barnes.

The Mancunian was quick to pay tribute Hare, insisting that despite this defeat he can bounce back.

"He was beaten by a better fighter on the night but all credit to James, he came here to fight and put up a good display," Barnes added.

"James is a class act and I have never boxed anyone as good as him before so I have to be pleased with my performance."

Hare, 28, said: "I thought the first two rounds were nip and tuck - there wasn't a lot in it at that stage.

"But I lost my rhythm a little bit and got drilled in the fourth and it was all downhill from there.

"A defeat like this hurts when it is in front of your local fans and there are so many people rooting for you.

"But I will go back to the gym and start again now and take it from there."

Ugly scenes outside the ring took the gloss off an entertaining night of boxing as violence between rival groups of fans flared prior to the main event.
