Ciara Mageean and her coach Eamonn Christie were among the winners at Athletics Ireland's annual awards in Dublin on Saturday night.

Mageean won the emerging & junior award after her stunning silver medal at the World Junior Championships in Canada.

Christie, meanwhile, was named coach of the year for his achievement in guiding Mageean's rise to athletics prominence.

Coach Christie was unable to attend the Dublin event so Mageean accepted the award on his behalf.

Mageean rounded off a brilliant 2010 season by qualifying for the 1500m final at the Commonwealth Games where she finished a highly creditable 10th in one of the stronger track and field events in Delhi.

Hurdler Derval O'Rourke was named athlete of the year in Dublin after winning a superb silver medal at the European Championships in Barcelona.

Robert Heffernan took the walking award after narrowly missing out on European Championship medals with his two fourth places in Catalonia.

Mark Kenneally was handed the cross country award after his excellent eighth place in the senior men's event at last December's European Championships in Dublin.

Kelly Proper took the field event award after extending her national long jump record in 2010 while Laois club St Abban's were named club of the year.
