Ciara Mageean second in World Junior 1500m final

Mageean won World Youths Silver a year ago

Ciara Mageean finished in an impressive second place in the 1500 metres final at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.

Mageean took the silver medal in a time of 4:09.51, with Tizita Bogale from Ethiopia winning in 4:08.06.

The Portaferry athlete had safely qualified for the final by winning her heat in 4:16.73.

Mageean's time in the final was a new Irish junior record and a new Northern Ireland senior record.

North Down's Mark Patterson qualified for the men's 800m semi-finals but failed to reach the final.

Mageean adds this medal to her World Youths 800m silver won 12 months ago in Italy.
