Ennis's coach gains national role

Highlights - Ennis wins heptathlon gold

Toni Minichiello has been appointed as UK Athletics national coach for combined events after guiding Jessica Ennis to the world heptathlon title.

He will split his time between coaching Ennis in Sheffield, and the National Performance Centre in Loughborough.

"This role enables me to support Jess, World Youth champion Katarina Thompson and our number one junior decathlete Daniel Gardiner," said Minichiello.

Meanwhile, Fayyaz [Fuzz] Ahmed has been appointed national high jump coach.

Along with Minichiello, Ahmed will be part of the new performance structure working under UK Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee and head of coaching and development Kevin Tyler.

Beijing Olympics silver medallist Germaine Mason, fellow Olympian Tom Parsons and European Under-23 finalist Jessica Leach have all worked with Ahmed who previously worked as a consultant coach for UKA.

Minichiello, who coached Ennis from the age of 11 to the heptathlon world championship title in Berlin earlier this year, added: "Having guided her from beginner to winner, I believe I am in a unique position to support, promote and understand the needs of an event from grassroots to elite.

"Being part of the senior performance team will also enable me to have a more influential role in the strategy, direction and development of combined events in partnership with the home countries and the wider combined events community."

Van Commenee said: "Both Toni and Fuzz will firstly be dedicated to the coaching of individual athletes heading towards the Olympic Games in London and will secondly support Kevin in enhancing the development of the event and the coaching within it."

Since his appointment in early 2009, the Dutchman has appointed six national event coaches in the areas of men's and women's sprints, pole vault, triple jump, long jump and hurdles.
