Mageean sets Irish junior record

Mageean is emerging as Ireland's best junior since Sonia O'Sullivan

Portaferry teenager Ciara Mageean set a new Irish junior 800 metres record at Saturday's Irish Schools Championships at Tullamore.

The 17-year-old was 1.05 seconds inside the previous benchmark set by Sonia O'Sullivan more than 20 years ago.

Mageean set a time of 2:05.13, bettering O'Sullivan's previous record of 2:06.18.

Mageean recently set two championship records in the Aviva Ulster Schools Championship at the Antrim Forum.
