Mark Lewis-Francis marked his first appearance on the track in 18 months with victory in the 100m at a low-key meeting in Bedford. The 26-year-old, who missed the entire summer season last year with an Achilles injury, claimed victory in the 'B' race in 10.60 seconds. "Today was just to see how winter training has gone," said the 2004 Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist. "I wanted to come out and leave injury- free, in a competitive environment." Lewis-Francis, now coached by 1992 Olympic 100m champion Linford Christie, is setting his sights on the World Athletics Championships trials in Birmingham in six weeks time.

The Walsall athlete added: "Training has been going really well. "Me and my coach said today is just the start - 10.60 seconds with wind - I can't complain. I'm leaving with a smile on my face." Meanwhile, 23-year-old Jessica Ennis set a meeting high jump record, with a clearance of 1.89 metres. "I came close at 1.93m and was nearly there," said Ennis who, missed last summer's Olympic Games with a serious foot injury. "Taking into account the wind I'm happy. I haven't been well so didn't know if I was going to come here to compete." The Sheffield athlete has shown good form since her return from injury, having set a personal best in the heptathlon three weeks ago.
