Pickering thunders to sprint win
Craig Pickering
Pickering left Gardener and Lewis-Francis trailing behind
Craig Pickering romped to an impressive victory over more illustrious rivals Mark Lewis-Francis and Jason Gardener in the Norwich Union 60m in Glasgow.

Britain's Pickering clocked a personal best of 6.55 seconds from lane six to beat compatriot Gardener (6.70) and American Ernest Wiggins (6.71).

Lewis-Francis finished fourth in a season's best time of 6.76.

"I've been working really hard through the winter and it's coming to fruition so I'm really pleased," said Pickering.

The 20-year-old European junior 100m champion showed he has the ability to challenge for a medal at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in March.

But he added: "There's a lot of work to do before now and then. It was everyone's first race this year except mine so they're probably a bit rusty."

In the women's 60m race, Sweden's Susanna Kallur won in 7.25secs ahead of Britain's Jeanette Kwakye (7.29) and Germany's Sina Schielke (7.32).

Britain's Joice Maduaka, who was fourth in 7.41, was fortunate to be allowed to race after twitching on her blocks after the field had been called back for one false start.

Regulations dictate that whoever commits a second false start, irrespective of who was guilty of the first, will be disqualified.

Kallur, the European 60m indoor champion and European 100m gold medallist, earlier clinched the 60m hurdles from American Lolo Jones and Britain's Sarah McGreavy.

Olympic heptathlon bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton was fourth with a personal best of 8.21.

Britain's Andrew Turner, last year's Commonwealth and European 110m hurdles bronze medallist, defied a false start to win the men's 60m hurdles in 7.69.

Sweden's Robert Kronberg was second in 7.74 with Germany's Helge Schwarzer third in 7.79.

The meeting at Kelvin Hall pits a British team against rivals from Germany, Sweden, the USA and a Commonwealth Select side.
