Holmes in 1500m triumph
Kelly Holmes
Holmes is on course to finish her track season with a flourish
Double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes powered to a comfortable 1500m win in the World Athletics Final in Monaco.

She won in a time of four minutes 4.55 seconds, seeing off Russian Tatyana Tomashova, who had beaten her at the IAAF Berlin Golden League meeting.

The Briton is scheduled to run the 800m on Sunday but has not definitely said she will take part.

Despite a whirlwind past three weeks since her Olympic success, Holmes looked fresh in the 1500m.

Just like in the Athens 1500m, she bided her time until midway down the home straight.

She then flew away from the field, opening up a gap of 0.63secs over Tomashova, who finished runner-up behind her in the Olympic event.

Holmes, who stayed much closer to her rivals throughout the race than in the German capital, was barely out of breath.

Her fellow Briton Hayley Tullett, last year's world bronze medallist, was never in contention and finished 11th in 4.08:70.

In other events, Jamaican 100m star Asafa Powell won his 10th event of the season.

The 21-year-old, who trailed in fifth in the Olympic final, ran an impressive 9.98 seconds.

Olympic pole vault champion Timonthy Mack joined the elite group to have gone over six metres.

The 32-year-old American vaulted 6.01m to still lie some way off the Sergei Bubka's world mark of 6.14m outdoors.

America's Allen Johnson took the 110m hurdles title.

The four-time world champion, who fell in the second round at the Olympics, won in a time of 13.16 seconds from Jamaica's Maurice Wignall.

Veronica Campbell of Jamaica added another title to the 200m crown she won in Athens.

Another Jamaican, Commonwealth 400m champion Michael Blackwood, won his event in 44.95 seconds.
