Marcus Trescothick was born in Keynsham, Somerset, and played cricket for Avon Schools and Keynsham CC. At the age of 11, he had weekly sessions at a cricket school in Bath.
He made his first-class debut for Somerset aged just 17. He captained England under-19s against India in 1994 and went on to make 1000 runs at that level - only bettered by John Crawley among English cricketers. Marcus was appointed vice-captain of Somerset when he was 23.
Despite his early success, Marcus had to wait until he was 24 before being called up to the England senior team. He made a good impression in the one-day NatWest Series against Zimbabwe and the West Indies in 2000, notching up 244 runs in total. A full Test debut then followed against the West Indies, as he formed a new opening partnership with Michael Atherton.
A good 2000 was capped by being voted Player of the Year by the Professional Cricketers' Association.
Marcus progressed so much that he earned a place in the squad for the 2000-01 winter tours to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He went on to score his first test century during the First Test against Sri Lanka.
As a teenager, Marcus loved sausages - hence his nickname Banger!
Marcus has never forgotten his old cricket club. Since turning pro, he has tried to play for Keynsham at least once a year.
