Bill's Ground Guide
Twickenham

England

I first visited Twickenham as a boy of 12 and I'd never seen a ground with three huge stands before. That was in 1936 - of course it's changed a bit since then.

I've always been struck by the car park picnics there and I remember, once, someone asking the person next door to turn their engine off. "Certainly," he said, "I was just warming the Claret!"

I've got a great respect for Twickenham. It's a magnificent ground and I have some wonderful memories of the place.

The crowd, generally speaking, is sporting and fair and that's important nowadays because they do sometimes try and influence the kickers.

I was there in 1938 when Scotland won 28-16, but they haven't done too well since!
