Nine legs, nine countries and 32,700 miles
Race finish Southern Ocean Doldrums
The Volvo Ocean Race, sometimes described as the "Everest" of ocean races, takes its fleet around the world in 32,700 miles.

Despite economic pressures to visit Asia - which boasts profitable business markets but unsuitable wind conditions - the race follows the classic trade routes.

It begins in Southampton on 23 September and is projected to end in Kiel on 9 June 2002.

In between, the nine legs vary hugely in length, but are scored equally, with the winner of each notching eight points, the second-placed boat getting seven points and so on.
