Snooker has emerged as one of television's most popular sports since the BBC began their coverage of the Embassy World Championship back in 1978.

It was introduced to help boost the sales of colour televisions. The current Embassy World champion is Mark Williams. Paul Hunter is the Benson and Hedges Masters champion, a tournament which is one of the biggest in the game and is being covered by BBC Television.
