Mervyn’s chances of winning are better than mine… but then I’m not in it this year! He’s number one in the world at the moment and the boy has put himself about, going all round the world to earn that position.
He does that to get his ranking points, but whatever he earns he must spend it all on his travelling costs.
Mervyn’s quite dedicated, but if he has a flaw it’s the fact that he doesn’t like the crowd getting at him. If they are on his side, he’ll play well but as soon as they get on his back and start calling him names, he can’t handle it.
You are always going to get a few verbals in an arena that size and that might be where Mervyn comes unstuck.
He’s playing Chris Mason in the first round and they are both solid 180-men.
They can be dodgy on their doubles, but that will be a great game.
Mason was in the semi-final last year, so he could go from hero to zero in one match.
It’s a shame one of them has to lose.
