The Triple Jump
 Triple Jump

Jonathan Edwards at last grabbed the Olympic gold that was denied him in Atlanta four years earlier to crown a glittering career.

The silver-haired Briton, who was pipped to gold by American Kenny Harrison four years ago, made no mistake this time around by jumping a fantastic 17.71m in the third round. Second behind Edwards was Cuban Yoel Garcia, who snatched the silver from Russian Denis Kapustin with a jump of 17.47m.

Larry Achike came close to grabbing bronze for Britain only to see it wrenched from his grasp in the final round.

Another Brit, the highly promising Phillips Idowu, finished in sixth.

In the women's event, Britain's Ashia Hansen made the final but did not get past the first three rounds, ending a very troubled year for her in a disappointing manner.

Tereza Marinova of Bulgaria won the event as big favourite Tatyana Lebedeva, who had looked unbeatable all season, saw her hopes washed away. Marinova leapt 15.20m to win the title, with Lebedeva finishing second after a leap of 15m.

Olena Hovorova of Ukraine picked up the bronze medal with a jump of 14.96m.
