The Long Jump
 Long Jump

Cuban Ivan Pedroso, the seven times world champion found a winning leap with his last jump to snatch gold back from Australian Jai Tuarima.

Pedroso and 'Jumpin' Jai' swapped the lead back and forth in a seesaw battle that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Pedroso posted a mark of 8.41m in the fourth round. Both Taurima and the partizan Aussie crowd were celebrating as Taurima also pulled out what looked to be a leading jump.

But the ecstasy soon turned to agony and frustration as it was measured at 8.40m. Bronze medal went to Ukraine's Roman Schurenko, whose 8.31m placed him ahead of compatriot Olexiy Lukashevych with 8.26m.

In the women's event, Marion Jones could only post a best jump of 6.92m, seven centimetres short of Germany's veteran jumper Heike Drechsler, who went on to claim her second long jump gold.

Jones recorded four fouls in six attempts as she failed to add to the gold medals she had already pocketed from the 100m and 200m.

British-born Italian Fiona May took silver on the same mark as Jones, claiming second by virtue of her next best jump.
