Poland's Szymon Ziolkowski caused an upset in the hammer by taking the gold with a throw of 80.02m.

Another outsider, Nicola Vizzoni, took the silver medal with a throw of 79.64m, another result that was unexpected after he finished seventh in the world championships. Ivan Tikhon claimed gold with a throw of 79.17m.

Teenager Kamila Skolimowska of Poland pulled off a major shock when she won the women's competition, being held for the first time ever. The 17-year-old World Junior Champion threw 71.16m with her third throw to shatter her personal best and beat Russian Olga Kuzenkova and Kirsten Muenchow of Germany, who won silver and bronze respectively.
