Lithuania's Virgilijus Alekna lived up to his tag of favourite to win gold in the men's discus with a fifth round throw of 69.30m.

However, Alekna, who threw 73.88m in August, got off to the worst possible start as his first throw measured just 58.55m and left him in last place. South African Frantz Kruger took an early lead, before Germany's defending champion Lars Riedel took over.

Riedel had improved to 68.50m to take silver while Kruger's best effort of 68.19m was good enough for bronze.

In the women's competition, Ellina Zvereva of Belarus became the oldest female Olympic gold champion in track and field after claiming a memorable victory in the women's discus at the Sydney Games.

Zvereva was overjoyed with her triumph. It came eight years after she was kicked out of the sport for steroid use.

Zvereva, close to turning 40-years-old, threw a season best of 68.40 metres to finish 2.69 in front of Anastasia Kelesidou of Greece.

Irina Yatchenko, also of Belarus, took the bronze with a best throw of 65.20.
