Britain's Dean Macey put in a brave performance in his first decathlon for more than a year but it was not enough to win him a medal. He produced a number of personal bests but recent injuries took their toll in the throwing events where he scored a little below par and that cost him a medal. At 23, however, he can look forward to Athens 2004 knowing he is favourite to take gold - if he stays fit. Gold went to Erki Nool of Estonia, though somewhat fortuitously. He was deemed to have fouled out in the Discus competition but appealed against the decision and his throw was reinstated. Otherwise the gold would have been a distant dream. Roman Sebrle of Czechoslavakia compensated for the disappointing showing by his compatriot and World Champion Tomas Dvozak by winning silver, while American Chris Huffings, who led right until the last event, the 1500m, took bronze. |
