Tomas Dvorak is the clear favourite, but all British eyes will be on Dean Macey to see if he can recreate the superb performance he put in when winning silver behind the Czech in the World Championships in Seville last year. It was only at the end of May 1999 that he completed his first decathlon, which makes his achievement even more stunning. In Seville, he set six personal bests on his senior international debut and it made him a national hero overnight. How he copes with the expectation will be interesting, but he has the ability to become the first British gold medallist in the decathlon since Daley Thompson. Chris Huffins of the USA and France's Sebastien Levicq will be challenging him for a medal spot. |
